Tuck Pointing
Tuck pointing is the restoration process whereby damaged, cracked, deteriorated, or otherwise defective mortar joints between masonry are removed (usually by metallic diamond-wheeled blade), and the resulting void then cleaned and replenished with fresh mortar. It is necessary when mortar has cracked, flaked, or disintegrated due to abrasive effects of the elements. The mortar should be designed to properly seal surrounding masonry units to each other, and is usually rated as a type-S (strong), for its binding strength. It is altogether necessary on older buildings whose masonry has deteriorated to a point whereby it permits high amounts of water to penetrate, thus threatening the interior structure of the building.
Although proper material and technique suffice to deliver a water-tight job, CTV3 also places priority on appearance. Skilled crews carefully select proper mortar dyes and tools to complement existing mortar color, texture, finish, and profile. A quality tuck pointing job not only seals and forms a tight barrier between the masonry structure and the elements, but also does not aesthetically alter the appearance of the structure to the beholder. In fact, a professional job renders it very difficult to tell that any work was at all done.
